Northern Regional Hospital Foundation Awards two students the Robin Hardy Hodgin Education Scholarship for 2024

MOUNT AIRY, NC– Northern Regional Hospital Foundation recently awarded the 2024 Robin Hardy Hodgin Education Scholarship to accomplished students planning to pursue a rewarding profession in healthcare. The recipients will use the scholarship to cover the cost of tuition, books, and supplies for selected students who enroll in accredited healthcare programs in nursing, pharmacy, or other allied health professions. The scholarship, established in the 2019-2020 school year, has already awarded $58,000 to support local graduates going into the healthcare field.

The Foundation committee awarded two scholarships, worth $5,000 each, to two graduates, who were carefully screened and selected by a team of Hospital leaders.

“This scholarship was established to honor one of the most gifted and committed nursing leaders in the healthcare industry. It provides financial assistance to deserving students who have decided to pursue a career in the nursing profession. The program is one of many ways that Northern supports our local youth and exemplifies our commitment to education,” said Chris A. Lumsden, President & Chief Executive Officer of Northern Regional Hospital, in announcing this year’s award winners.

Northern Regional Hospital established the innovative scholarship program in October 2019, named in honor of NRH’s current Senior Vice President for Patient Services & Chief Nursing Officer. Through private donations, the Robin H. Hodgin Education Scholarship funds are matched dollar-for-dollar by the Northern Regional Foundation. The Hospital’s Scholarship Committee awards one-time scholarships to eligible students enrolling in a health science degree-granting program at an accredited college or university of their choice. Scholarships award prospective students who reside in Surry County and the surrounding region and aspire to a nursing or allied health career – including respiratory therapy, physical therapy, medical imaging technology, laboratory science, pharmacy, and others.

Her unwavering commitment to healing and humanity will forever resonate within the walls of our facility. This scholarship represents more than just financial assistance. It serves as a symbol of our deep appreciation and respect for the incredible impact that Robin and all our healthcare heroes have made. It truly reflects their unwavering dedication to fostering a culture of healing and comfort within our community.

This scholarship program is designed to help jumpstart the careers of students pursuing a career in nursing or allied health. Recipients are selected based on their outstanding achievements, academic excellence, active participation in the community, and financial need. Both recipients had impressive GPAs and were involved in many extracurricular activities and community service activities. These students were highly recommended for this scholarship by their teachers and school administrators. We have no doubt that they will represent Northern Regional Hospital well.”

Cloe Marsh is a 2024 graduate of North Surry High School and plans to attend Surry Community College in the fall to pursue a degree in Nursing. “I am very excited about this opportunity, which provided me with steps to obtaining my nursing degree. I look forward to becoming a nurse and providing important services to various people. I enjoy helping others in any way possible, and this career will be a perfect place for me. I am thrilled to learn many new things and am always open to new things, improving myself and improving my work skills. I am very thankful to be chosen for this scholarship, and I’m looking forward to the future,” said Cloe.

Carlie Utt is a 2024 Mount Airy High School graduate who plans to attend Appalachian State University in the fall to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. “I am so excited to attend Appalachian State University and continue my nursing career. I know this school’s program will benefit me a ton, although it is pricey, and I am so thankful I was chosen for this scholarship to help,” said Carlie.
